NASA crew finished one year in a fake Mars habitat in Houston
Four people lived inside a 1 700-square-foot 3D-printed habitat at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston under rules that duplicated a trip to Mars.
After exactly 365 days the crew reached the one-year point inside the habitat.
The habitat now holds the crew until 31 October when they will open the hatch and step out after a 378-day run. They will then spend two weeks in debriefs and checks that feed directly into NASA’s Human Research Program data sets on year-long missions. Those data sets will shape rules for food stocks, exercise gear, medical kits and decision aids built for crews that cannot talk to Earth in real time.
